Swim England Pre School Framework

The Frame Works of Swim England - Learn to Swim

The Swim England Pre-School Framework is about creating the start of a lifelong love of water.

Every child should be given a chance to learn to swim and feel like they are able to do so in any situation.

Swim England and Cornish Swim Academy – believe that the first experiences in water and the pool environment for babies and toddlers, should be fun, positive and memorable.

Swim England Pre-School Framework, Confidence, and Awards

The key focus areas of the Pre-School Framework are:

Giving children confidence from the word go -?Teaching the core skills needed to learn the four strokes through fun and games

One of the ways Swim England help keep toddlers and preschool aged children motivated?is a range of colourful Awards with fun and friendly characters to reward them as they progress.

Discovery Duckling Awards

These Swim England Pre-School Framework Awards made up of four separate awards which are perfect for babies from birth (subject to Health Visitor advice being followed). They are also great for pre-school children who are new to swimming.

Usually parents or carers will attend swimming lessons and join their babies or young children in the water. This provides reassurance for the child and gives the parent or carer confidence in assisting their child in the water.

I CAN Awards

These are a set of nine Awards to complement the Duckling and Discovery Duckling Awards for the Swim England Preschool Framework. They can be achieved at any time. They help to motivate young children, building their confidence and giving them achievable targets during the early stages of learning to swim.

The Awards are made up of the following:

I CAN?

  1. Enter the water safely
  2. Jump in
  3. Float on my front
  4. Float on my back
  5. Roll over
  6. Blow bubbles
  7. Swim
  8. Enter, turn, return
  9. Exit safely

Swim England Learn to Swim Framework Stages 1-7

The Swim England?Learn to Swim Framework is made up of seven stages, and is about developing confident and competent swimmers through fun and enjoyment.

It is the backbone of swimming lessons for primary school aged children and is the most widely recognised part of swimming lessons.

Each of the seven stages of the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework?has a set of targets for the pupil to meet so they can move up to the next stage.

This part of the Programme not only teaches a child to swim using the four recognised strokes. It also gives them a number of other aquatic skills, which help give children the ability to do a?range of other water-based sports.

The Swim England Learn to Swim Framework gives children confidence in their swimming ability. From this comes a love and enjoyment for swimming and being in the water and the skills and motivation to lead a healthy and active lifestyle while they continue regular swimming through to their adult life.

Fun and Games with the Learn to Swim Framework

Children find it easier learn a new skill through fun and games. This Framework continues to have a high focus on having fun and enjoying being in the water.

It takes a games-led approach to learning to swim, giving the core aquatic skills needed to become competent swimmers. These core skills are:

  1. Entry
  2. Exits
  3. Floatation and Balance
  4. Rotation and Orientation
  5. Streamlining
  6. Aquatic Breathing
  7. Travel and Coordination
  8. Water Safety
  9. Health and Fitness
  10. By learning and then binding these skills together, a child will be able to understand the processes needed to swim the four recognised strokes; front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly
