All about the STA Pool Snorkelling Programme

The STA Pool Snorkelling Programme is a series of 3 fun and progressive awards which are designed to introduce anyone from the young age of 8 to the skills and techniques required for safe and enjoyable snorkelling in a pool environment.So if your out in and about the Cornish beaches this could be perfect practice, or even if you off to sunny spots over the winter !

We have 3 levels of great snorkelling fun on offer, all spread out over the Autumn term:

  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 3
Whats what to learn!?
  1. Prepare and fit the snorkling equipment correctly and safely
  2. Perform a safe entry into safe shallow water supervised
  3. Clearwater the water out from the snorkel by using the blast method and resume breathing through the snorkel without lifting the face from the water, tricky!
  4. Swim Training Fins 25 metres with your kit on!
  5. Understand 4 hand signals during snorkelling so that you are safe
  6. Perform a surface dive and return to the surface, clearing the snorkel on the surface using the blast method, safely
  7. Exit the water safely and remove all snorkelling equipment independently, without help
  8. Participate in a snorkelling game,with instructor or own own or many be a few games!
Learning Outcomes then whats next
  1. Prepare and fit the equipment correctly with out help
  2. Perform 3 different types of safe entries into the water from Giant stride, backward roll, slide-in entry and walking, to get 10-out of 10
  3. Clear a fogged mask on the surface, with out help
  4. Fin 100 metres – with kit.
  5. Understand 6 hand signals to instructor
  6. Swim 25 metres at the surface in water too deep to stand while wearing snorkelling equipment safely
  7. Perform 1 deep and 1 shallow surface dives, clearing the snorkel on returning to the surface
  8. Equalise the pressure on the ears while underwater to accommodate a change in depth, with kit
  9. Swim 15 metres underwater we no effort
  10. Ascend safely from a depth of 1.0 metres
  11. Exit deep water safely and remove all snorkelling equipment independently
  12. Participate in 2 different snorkelling games with fun at the end
Learning Outcomes final stages
  1. Clearwater from the snorkel by using the displacement method with no help
With a snorkling buddy
  1. Then Perform 3 different types of safe entries into the water from Giant stride, backward roll, slide-in entry and walking
  2. Fin 100 metres with no help
  3. Swim 15 metres underwater and exchange hand signals to instructor and other snorkelers
  4. Exchange and correctly interpret and respond to all hand signals
  5. Snorkel 400 metres without lifting your face out of the water; during the swim perform 4 quick surface dives and swim at least 15 metres underwater on each surface dive
  6. Ascend safely from a depth of 1.0 metres
  7. Exit deep water safely and remove all snorkelling equipment
  8. Participate in 3 different snorkelling games
